Abstract
Culture swabs were taken from the periurethral area of 59 consecutive uncir cumcised boys with vesicoureteral reflux (WR) and 36 boys undergoing circum cision. A pure growth of a uropathogen was isolated in 22 (37%) boys with V OR who were receiving antibiotic prophylaxis and in 10 (28%) boys who under went circumcision. Antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with VUR was not effe ctive in reducing the bacterial colonization of the prepuce. We recommend c ircumcision in boys, particularly infants with VUR, to reduce the risk of u rinary tract infections.
