This paper presents an improved fingerprint verification system (FVS). It i
s essential to improve the quality of the input images and to reduce the mi
nutiae matching time to ensure the performance of the FVS. The improved fin
gerprint image enhancement algorithm is based on the closing method and the
information of local ridge orientation. The report that the proposed algor
ithm has shown a fairly good performance in simulations. The also propose a
fast and reliable minutiae matching algorithm, which is capable of finding
the correspondences between minutiae in the input image and the stored tem
plate by just using the minutiae in core region and avoiding an exhaustive
search. To evaluate the performance of the proposed matching and image enha
ncement algorithms, we implemented the FVS using an ADSP21060 processor.
