This article presents the results of three studies which had for purpose th
e construction and validation of a new measure of motivation toward volunte
erism, namely the "Echelle de motivation envers l'action benevole (EMAB)".
The EMAB is composed of eight subscales assessing the following types of mo
tivation : Altruistic Intrinsic Motivation, Altruistic Integrated Regulatio
n, Altruistic Identified Regulation, Altruistic Introjected Regulation, Ego
istic Intrinsic Motivation (associated with the pleasure of acquiring knowl
edge), Egoistic Identified Regulation, Egoistic External Regulation (associ
ated with gaining work-related experience and social prestige), and Amotiva
tion. Overall, results reveal that the EMAB displays adequate levels of int
ernal consistency as well as satisfying indices of temporal stability, Resu
lts of a confirmatory factor analysis also confirm the 8-factor structure o
f the EMAB. In addition, the construct validity of the EMAB's subscales is
supported in relation with variables pertaining to the dimensions of self-d
etermination. altruism and egoism, as well as with variables related to the
quality of one's volunteer implication. It thus appears that the EMAB is r
eady to be used in volunteerism research. To this effect, we propose future
directions pertaining to both theoretical and applied research.
