There are many techniques for sulcus-suturing dislocated or partially dislo
cated intraocular lenses. Many involve passing suture or a knot around the
end of the haptic before securing the suture to the sclera. However, in som
e patients, the tip of the dislocated haptic cannot be visualized. We descr
ibe a suturing method using vitrectomy techniques that was used in two pati
ents when the end of the haptic could not be visualized. The technique invo
lves passing an untied loop of double-armed suture under the haptic so that
it emerges upward between the haptic and the optic. The loop of suture is
regrasped from above the haptic and externalized. The free ends are passed
through the loop in a manner analogous to a luggage tag, and the knot is se
cured. This technique may be useful in patients where the tip of the haptic
cannot be visualized, or in patients requiring minimal manipulation of the
intraocular lens.
