Abstract
We report the observation of whispering-gallery-mode lasers based on Er3--d oped ZBLAN microspheres coupled with half-tapered and tapered optical fiber s. A multimode lasing effect is observed at 1.56 mum when the taper diamete rs are properly adjusted so that their fundamental propagation constants ma tch those of the resonant modes of interest. Overlap between the pump and t he laser geometrical modes is optimized by pumping at 1.48 mum. (C) 2001 Op tical Society of America.
