Abstract
Compton scattering cross sections from C-12 have been measured at scatterin g angles of theta (gamma) = 35 degrees - 150 degrees using tagged photons o f E-gamma=84-105 MeV. Attempts to extract nucleon polarizabilities from the data were hampered by model ambiguities. These included uncertainties in t he strength of the electric quadrupole and quasideuteron total photon absor ption channels, and in the parametrizations of meson-exchange effects and n uclear form factors. These ambiguities led to large variations: in the extr acted values of the effective polarizabilities of the bound nucleon. Inelas tic Compton scattering cross sections from the 4.44 MeV first-excited state were also obtained.
