The single and multinucleon transfer cross sections in O-16, O-18+ Yb-174 r
eactions were measured at E-lab = 83 MeV bombarding energy. The data were a
nalyzed to obtain the variation of transfer cross sections with the number
of nucleons transferred from the projectile to the target nucleus, and with
respect to the ground state Q value (Q(gg)) of the transfer reaction. In O
-18+ Yb-174 reaction, the two-neutron stripping and the two-neutron correla
ted cluster transfer cross sections are strongly enhanced as compared to th
e O-16 + Yb-174 reaction. The results have been discussed on the basis of t
he possible influence of the valence neutrons in the O-18 nucleus on multip
article transfer cross sections. The transfer probabilities of multinucleon
transfers have been analyzed as a function of distance of closest approach
and the results for two-neutron transfer is consistent with the suppositio
n of correlated pair transfer of valence nucleons in the O-18+ Yb-174 react
ion.
