M. Schweikert et B. Meyer, Characterization of intracellular bacteria in the freshwater dinoflagellate Peridinium cinctum, PROTOPLASMA, 217(4), 2001, pp. 177-184
Intracellular bacteria belonging to two phylogenetically different groups o
f eubacteria were found in cultures of the freshwater dinoflagellate Peridi
nium cinctum (O. F Muller) Ehrenberg isolated from the eutrophic lake Pluss
see (Federal Republic of Germany). The phylogenetic relationships of the ba
cteria were studied with fluorochrome-conjugated oligonucleotides specific
for archaebacteria, eubacteria, alpha-, beta- and gamma -proteobacteria, co
mplementary to 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA sequences, respectively. The bacteria
are members of the eubacterial alpha- and gamma -subgroups of proteobacteri
