The thermodynamic properties of melts in the Fe-S and Fe-S-M systems were s
tudied calorimetrically to determine the desulfurizing power of various d a
nd f metals. Conclusions on the desulfurization activity of d and f metals
in sulfur-containing iron-based melts were drawn. It was found that the add
ition of some metals to sulfur-containing solutions caused substantial chan
ges in their partial molar enthalpies. In Fe-S-M ternary system melts, the
desulfurizing power of metals increased in the series Mo --> Cr --> Mn -->
Nh --> Ta --> Ti --> Zr --> Hf --> La --> Ce.
