Abstract
In the study involving 174 horses, the efficacy and tolerance of ceftiofur (Excenel (TM) Sterile Powder) for the treatment of acute bronchitis was exa mined. The clinical condition, rectal temperature, the occurrence of nasal discharge and coughing together with general disturbances in the general co ndition of the animals were recorded. At the start of the study, the mean r ectal temperature was 39.5 degreesC +/- 0.8 degreesC. More than 90% of the horses were coughing, almost 80% had an altered general condition. After a mean treatment period of 5 days, using 1 ml of powder per 25 kg bodyweight administered intramuscularly once daily, a clinical improvement was observe d in 92.5% of cases, with 65% having a complete cure and 27% exhibited a cl ear improvement. The efficacy was similar in horses with a body weight belo w 120kg, mainly foals, and heavier, adult animals. The incidence of side ef fects was approximately 2% and there was tolerance at the injection site. E xcenel Sterile Powder can be recommended as a highly effective, well tolera ted product for the treatment of acute bronchitis in horses.
