This is a first report of an ongoing, collaborative study by the national P
reserve of Tauric Chersonesos and the Institute of Classical Archaeology, A
ustin, Texas, of the chora of the Greek colony of Cherosnesos in southweste
rn Crimea, Ukraine. it presents an overview of the problems with the basic
literature, the goals of this interdisciplinary project, and the preliminar
y results of the first five years of collaboration. The topics and methodol
ogies covered include the historical development of the chora in light of n
early a century of archaeological investigation and scholarship, the geogra
phic and geomorphic characteristics of the chora; the topographical and arc
haeological features and recent changes to the land surface through space-b
ased remote sensing, the excavation and conservation of an early Hellenisti
c period farm site; and the excavation of a multiphase fortified site on th
e eastern border of the chora, now under way.
