Abstract
A patent foramen ovale was demonstrated by contrast transesophageal echocar diography in 24.6% of 345 subjects participating in a population-based stud y. This frequency was higher than that observed in patients with cerebral i schemic events (19.0% of 334 patients), suggesting that patent foramen oval e is underdiagnosed in routine clinical practice.
