The Pubertal Development Scale from Petersen and Crockett (1985) is a self-
report instrument that measures levels of pubertal maturation in adolescenc
e. The main goal of this study was to validate the French version of the in
strument on a high school population. The latter was administered on three
occasions to 255 students during their first and second high school years.
The measure's internal consistency and the sequence of bodily changes of bo
ys and girls allowed us to establish the reliability of the students' perce
ption of their pubertal development. Like Tanner (1962) and Petersen et al.
(1985, 1988), five categories identifying different pubertal status were l
abeled. Results showed satisfactory reliability from such a pubertal classi
fication system.
