It has been considered so far that the inner cavities of carbon nanotubes a
re the desired place for the storage of hydrogen molecules. Here we show th
at the inter-nanotube space between densely aligned carbon nanotubes, produ
ced by catalytic pyrolysis of ferrocene, could also contribute to the effec
tive uptake of molecular hydrogen. This provides a new way to improve the p
roperties of carbon nanotubes in storing hydrogen or other elemental molecu
les. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
