Abstract
A new silole-containing monomer, 1,1-dihexyl-3,4-diphenyl-2,5-bis{2-(3,4-et hylenedioxy)-thienyl}silole, was synthesized and electropolymerized at a qu ite low potential (E-ox,E-m = 0.29 V vs Fc/Fc(+)) to yield an electroactive polymer. Spectroelectrochemical and colorimetric analysis has shown that t he polymer switches between blue and transmissive yellow-green upon doping. The low-lying LUMO levels of the siloles, combined with the electron-rich character of the 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene units, confer upon this new po lymer a narrow band gap of 1.3-1.4 eV.
