Phase synchronized entrainment of coupled oscillators with distributed natu
ral frequencies is studied by exploring the dynamical manifestation. The ro
ute from partial to complete phase synchronization is identified as a casca
de of transitions from high- to low-dimensional tori (quasiperiodicities) i
nterrupted by intermittent chaos. Torus ON-OFF intermittency is found at th
e onset of desynchronization. Desynchronization-induced chaos originates fr
om the mixing of intermittent ON-OFF timescales.
