Abstract
In reading the unhappiness of characters in Evelyn Lau's writing as symptom atic of alienation in a capitalist culture, how might one rethink the relati ons between class and sexuality? From sex trade workers to mistresses to wi ves, how do women's relations to capital affect their emotional states as f ound in Lau's fiction and poetry? As human psyche meets consumerist society , this essay considers the effects of market forces both within and around Lau's work and looks wistfully for possible affiliations to exceed the limi ts set out by the commodification of women's bodies.
