The formulation of a family of two-dimensional finite elements that model a
n ideal gas is presented. The elements support nonlinear analysis and repre
sent either a plane strain or axisymmetric condition. The family of element
s is intended for use with conventional elasticity-type elements to perform
structural analysis of insulated glass units, pressure vessels, and other
systems for which the interaction between a gas and a solid is of interest.
Extension of the formulation to three-dimensional elements is straightforw
