Identical nonlinear chaotic systems linked by a common noise term (or
signal) may synchronize. The synchronization process, which is a combi
ned effect of the noise and of the deterministic part of the map, coul
d show much more complex behavior than the one suggested by recent stu
dies. In particular, it is demonstrated that when the noise couples th
e states of an ensemble of identical systems the change of sign of the
largest Lyapunov exponent of the ensemble is not necessarily connecte
d with the synchronization.
