Ultratrace and isotopic analysis of long-lived radionuclides by double-focusing sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using direct liquid sample introduction

This report is concerned with the investigation of double-focusing sector f
ield inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (DF-ICPMS) for ultratrace
and isotopic ratio analysis of long-lived radionuclides (Ra-226, Th-230, T
h-232, U-233, Np-237, U-238, and Am-241) using the direct injection high ef
ficiency nebulizer (DIHEN). A new shielded torch arrangement, known as the
guard electrode, improves relative sensitivity by a factor of six when the
DIHEN is used. Absolute sensitivity with the DIHEN is on the order of 1300
(Ra-226) to 1700 (U-238) counts/fg at a solution consumption rate of 5 muL/
min. This is a factor of from three to 20 better than the results obtained
by a conventional nebulizer-spray chamber arrangement (e.g., ultrasonic and
pneumatic nebulizers). The DIHEN-DF-ICPMS is successfully tested for isoto
pe ratio measurements of U-235/U-238 standards and environmental radioactiv
e waste solutions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
