Ps. Fedotov et Va. Kronrod, Modeling of the hydrodynamic behavior of two non-miscible liquid phases ina rotating coiled column, J LIQ CHR R, 24(11-12), 2001, pp. 1685-1697
A hypothesis of the mechanism of the stationary phase retention in a rotati
ng coiled column has been further developed. Hydrophilic liquid systems hav
e been considered in detail. Incomprehensible earlier peculiarities in thei
r behavior have become rather clear. Starting from the balance of forces of
quite different nature acting on two non-miscible liquids in the column, t
he basic equation of the retention process stability has been derived. Math
ematical expressions have been obtained allowing one to estimate, theoretic
ally, the volume of the stationary phase retained in the column, taking int
o account physico-chemical properties of a liquid system under investigatio
n, and operation and basic design parameters of a planet centrifuge. The ex
perimental data on the retention of the sec-butanol - water system support
the speculation made.
