Abstract
The average electronic oxide polarizability (alpha (2-)(o)) and optical bas icity (Lambda) of numerous simple oxides have been estimated on the basis o f different properties of oxides: average electronegativity (chi (av)) and energy gap (E-g). The estimated values are in good agreement with the liter ature values. Similarly the optical basicity and average electronic polariz ability of binary oxides glasses (phosphate, berate, silicate, germanate, t ellurite and titanate) have been evaluated on the basis of average electron egativity (chi (av)) only. The performance of the present method is compare d with Dimitrov and Komatsu relationships. A good agreement is observed bet ween the computed and literature values. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
