The inefficient formylation of adamantane by CO initiated by superacid
systems based on polyhalomethanes and aluminum halides becomes select
ive in the presence of methylcyclopentane and affords 1-adamantanecarb
aldehyde in an almost quantitative yield under mild conditions.
