Abstract
Benzaldehydes and acetophenones bearing tethered carbonyl chains underwent the intramolecular phenyl-carbonyl coupling reactions, by mediation of sama rium diiodide and hexamethylphosphoramide, to afford the xanthenes and fuse d benzocarbocyclic compounds containing carbonyl and hydroxyl substituents.
