Abstract
The boundaries, the influences on, and consequences of a shortterm memory ( STM) capacity of 4 leads us to consider glob-al versus local processing. We argue that in schizophrenia cognitive problems can he partly in pre-consci ous automatic selective attention and partly vith the speed of processing i n later controlled processes (including compound STM). The influence of aut omatic attentional mechanisms may be underestimated in normal psychology an d explain the loss of the magic 4 in schizophrenia.
