Abstract
Vertes & Eastman argue against the popular idea that dreams promote memory consolidation arid suggest instead that REM provides periodic endogenous st imulation during sleep. Although we suspect that])inch of the debate oil th e function of dreams reflects a trio eager acceptance of the "adaptationist program," we nonetheless support the position of the authors and propose i t specific advantage of periodic REM activity.
