Representative data is used to describe the mass and energy flows and
cal bon dioxide emissions during the manufacture of rime and limestone
products. The evaluation includes not only the flows directly involve
d but also tile primary energy and material inputs which occur when tr
acing the system back to the sources of raw material and primary energ
y. The balance boundaries are chosen so that individual stages in tile
manufacturing process can be examined first, and then these can befit
ted together like building blocks to form product manufacturing lines
or: for example, a lime works by extending the area covered by the bal
ance. All the partial processes, starting from excavation and covering
the manufacturing process, are included quantitatively in the balance
in respect of energy expenditure, raw materials expenditure and carbo
n dioxide emissions produced, i.e. the cumulative energy and material
inputs and cumulative CO2 emission are determined for each case. Chara
cteristic numbers are defined for assessing the products or process st
ages. The procedure described above is illustrated with the aid of an
example and then carried out for all the manufacturing steps under con
sideration.
