As the main by-product of fullerene, a novel form of solid carbon - the she
ll of the 'cylindrical hard deposit' was synthesized by electrical are disc
harge between two carbon electrodes. The results of the electrochemical int
ercalation of lithium into the shell in 1 M LiClO4 EC/DEC (50:50) electroly
te are presented here. Our results show that the shell has high irreversibl
e capacity. Complementary analytical techniques, including X-ray diffractio
n, slow scan rate cyclic voltammetry, constant current charge-discharge tes
ts and ac impedance investigations, were used for full structural character
ization of the shell and the electrochemical intercalation of lithium. (C)
