The photoelectron spectra of ReO2- and ReO3- have been investigated at 4.99
and 6.42 eV photon energies in a pulsed molecular beam experiment using a
laser vaporization cluster source (LVS) and a magnetic bottle type time-of-
flight (TOF) photoelectron spectrometer (PES). Electron affinities (EAs) an
d vertical detachment energies (VDEs) have been measured for both oxides. T
he EA and VDE of ReO2 are 2.5 +/- 0.1 and 2.7 +/- 0.1 eV; those of ReO3 are
3.6 +/- 0.1 and 3.7 +/- 0.1 eV. These values are in good agreement with th
ose recently determined by Andrews and co-workers [J. Phys. Chem. A 104 (20
00) 3457] using infrared matrix spectroscopy and density functional calcula
tions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
