Postgenomic medicine - Presymptomatic testing for prediction and prevention

Newborn screening programs provide a model for integration of genetic infor mation and technology into the public health arena of predictive medicine. The probability that an individual with a mutation in a gene associated wit h a disorder will develop the disorder depends on environmental conditions and interactions between disease-causing genes and modifier genes. Research is needed to provide the information required to develop predictive models for genetic disease.
