Kc. Moltz et al., Ectopic cardiac calcification associated with hyperparathyroidism in a boywith hypophosphatemic rickets, CURR OP PED, 13(4), 2001, pp. 373-375
An adolescent with hypophosphatemic rickets developed cardiac calcification
s in the absence of hypercalcemia or elevation of the phosphocalcic product
(the product of the total serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations). Ca
rdiac calcifications led to aortic and mitral valve dysfunction, myocardial
calcification, and arrhythmia. Hyperparathyroidism probably played a signi
ficant role in the development of this complication, which emphasizes the n
ecessity for intermittent assessment of parathyroid status in individuals r
eceiving medical therapy for hypophosphatemic rickets. (C) 2001 Lippincott
