A primigravid baboon pregnant with twins developed a spontaneous clini
cal syndrome with characteristics similar to human preeclampsia. Evide
nce of preeclampsia included increased mean blood pressure, the occurr
ence of proteinuria, a decrease in platelet count, and renal endotheli
osis (i.e., glomerular capillary subendothelial deposits, mesangial fi
brin deposition and expansion, and double-contouring of the glomerular
basement membrane with endothelial cell swelling and lysis). These le
sions occurred spontaneously and resolved postpartum.
