Transportation security has become an issue of major concern and its s
alience is likely to increase because of such trends as globalization,
regional integration and the increasing connections between communica
tions and transportation technologies. This article suggests that tran
sportation security must be viewed within the context of national secu
rity, that the character of modern transportation systems provides new
opportunities that can be exploited by terrorists and that the existi
ng security system suffers from severe weaknesses. There is a need for
an overall strategy based on a systemic view of the problem, includin
g its social dimensions.
