In this essay on "Reticent techniques in the poetic language of Giorgio Cap
roni", Raffaella Scarpa proposes some definitions and procedures of recogni
tion of the techniques of the reticence, providing examples taken from the
Italian poetry of the 19th century. In the second part of the article, the
case of Caproni is studied in comparison with those definitions and procedu
res: the author concludes that the pauses frequently used by the poet shoul
d be considered as a "borderline phenomenon", since the resulting effect of
silence cannot be properly defined as "reticence", with the only exception
of Il vetrone.
