Abstract
When a child or adolescent presents with academic difficulty it is imp ortant to do a comprehensive assessment of possible causes. This asses sment includes the individual, the family, the school, and the communi ty, including the influence of cultural, bilingual, and environmental factors. A decision tree is presented as a way of conceptualizing such an evaluation. Each step in the assessment process is discussed in th is article.
