Modelings of the radio propagation channel are among the most important and
fundamental issues. The levels of the desired signal and cochannel interfe
rence are associated with the measurement system. A new approach to estimat
e the RF attenuation rate (AR, dBm/m) with the extraction technique is intr
oduced in this paper. Any, changes due to an environmental disturbance or c
ochannel interference will cancel. The AR can be used to characterize the t
rees (or medium) with a linear expression. In practice, the attenuation rat
e results of four roadside trees are described based on data acquired from
experiments employing an RF channel sounding system at 1800 MHz. It makes t
he estimations suitable for wireless communication systems. (C) 2001 John W
