Abstract
A simple model has been used to test the applicability of the local density approximation (LDA) to calculate different moments of the energy loss dist ribution. A first-order calculation of the excitation and ionisation of the hydrogen atom is used as a reference to extract the range of validity of t he LDA. The impact parameter dependence of the energy loss and extensions t o other systems are discussed as well. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All r ights reserved.
