The effect of titanium addition to Cu-Zn alloys (in the zone of the chemica
l composition of commercial brasses) has been studied. Ternary alloys were
melted from a Cu-Zn base alloy (with 40 wt.% Zn) and with titanium addition
s up to similar to6 at.%. Simultaneous differential thermal analysis and te
rmogravimetry (SDT) and isothermal homogenisation with rapid cooling have b
een employed to determine the equilibrium phases at different temperatures
and the invariant reactions. The alloys were studied by scanning electron m
icroscopy (SEM) and the chemical analysis of the phases have been determine
d by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The microstructure obtained show
s the existence of an eutectic reaction in the studied region. The temperat
ure and the chemical composition of the phases present in the reaction were
determined. This eutectic reaction has not been referred to in previous wo
rks on the ternary system.
