Recognizing that the current system of schooling is grounded in - and was d
esigned for the industrial machine age of the nineteenth century, this pape
r brings into focus the necessity of designing new systems of learning and
human development that are in-sync with the new realities of the informatio
n/knowledge age and are capable to co-evolve with the emerging society of t
he new century. The paper offers an approach to the design and self-organiz
ation of these new systems. In closing, two educational images are projecte
d; one stands for 'the new story of education', the other depicts 'the old
story.' Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
