Objective To evaluate the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging in assessm
ent of adolescent patients with complex Mullerian anomalies and its contrib
ution towards operative management.
Design A retrospective review of magnetic resonance imaging and operative f
indings.
Setting A London teaching hospital that is a tertiary referral centre for c
omplex reproductive tract disorders.
Sample All adolescents referred for assessment of complex Mullerian anomali
es, from 1996 to 1999, and undergoing both magnetic resonance imaging and s
urgical assessment.
Method In the nine suitable patients magnetic resonance imaging and surgica
l findings were compared and the role of magnetic resonance imaging in dete
rmining the route and type of surgery was evaluated.
Main outcome measures Magnetic resonance imaging data on reproductive tract
anatomy and surgical findings detailing reproductive tract anatomy.
Results There was good correlation of magnetic resonance imaging and operat
ive findings in all cases. The best correlation was with uterine structure.
In four cases the magnetic resonance imaging findings were essential for t
he appropriate choice of the surgical approach and type of procedure.
Conclusions Magnetic resonance ima-ina is a valuable tool in the management
of this particular complex group of patients.
