Ml. Aguirre-macedo et al., Some adult endohelminths parasitizing freshwater fishes from the Atlantic drainages of Nicaragua, COMP PARASI, 68(2), 2001, pp. 190-195
Adults of 12 endoparasitic helminths were recorded from 8 freshwater fish s
pecies from the South Atlantic Autonomous Region, Nicaragua: 8 digeneans Cr
assicutis cichlasomae, Magnivitellinum simplex, Oligogonotylus manteri, Pro
sthenhystera obesa, Saccocoelioides sogandaresi, Saccocoelioides sp. 1. Sac
cocoelioides sp. 2, and Allocreadiidae gen. sp. ("Crepidostomum" sp.); 3 ne
matodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) rebecae. Procamallanus (Spirocamall
anus) neocaballeroi, and Rhabdochona kidderi kidderi; and 1 acanthocephalan
Neoechinorhynchus golvani. Comparative measurements among S. sogandaresi f
rom Poecilia velifera, Saccocoelioides sp. I from Cichlasoma maculicauda, a
nd Saccocoelioides sp. 2 from Astyanax fasciatus, as well as drawings of th
e 2 latter species are given for future reference. All but C. cichlasomae a
nd O. manteri are reported from Nicaragua for the first time, and most taxa
also represent new geographical records for Central America. The majority
of species have previously been found in freshwater fishes from southeaster
n Mexico, which indicates a close similarity of the helminth faunas of both
regions, in accordance with previous data on the larval stages of endohelm
inths and gill monogeneans.
