Abstract
Recent developments in directed evolution technologies combined with innova tions in robotics and screening methods have revolutionized protein enginee ring. These methods are being applied broadly to many fields of biotechnolo gy, including chemical engineering, agriculture and human therapeutics. Mor e specifically, DNA shuffling and other methods of genetic recombination an d mutation have resulted in the improvement of proteins of therapeutic inte rest. Optimizing genetic diversity and fitness through iterative directed e volution will accelerate improvements in engineered protein therapeutics.
