The solid-state, gas-phase, and solution characterization of the predesigne
d cluster Cs[(SnL3)(2)Ag-3] is presented (L = 4-(diphenylphosphino)benzene-
1,2-diol). The solid-state structure confirms formation of a C-3/l, mesocat
e featuring three silver(I) cations linking two enantiomeric {SnL3}(2-) hal
ves and encapsulating a Cs+ cation. The presence of the Cs+ cation is essen
tial for successful formation of this pentametallic cluster. The H-1, C-13,
and P-31 NMR spectra as well as FAB mass spectrum of the complex are consi
stent with retention of this supramolecular structure in solution and the g
as phase.
