Methods and instruments using superconducting quantum interference devices
(SQUIDs) which are applied for measuring and displaying scattered magnetic
fields near the surface of submagnetic physical objects are reviewed. The p
rinciples of operation, design features, and main characteristics of scanni
ng SQUID magnetometers; are described. The efficiency of these devices in f
undamental research and applications is analyzed. The characteristics of di
fferent types of magnetic microscopes are compared.
