Js. Ishay et E. Levtov, SLEEP DURATION IN HORNETS IS INFLUENCED BY PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL MEANS, Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Part A, Physiology, 109(3), 1994, pp. 567-573
Hornet workers (Vespa orientalis, Hymenoptera, Vespinae) were anesthet
ized by diethyl-ether, and their sleeping period was monitored. Sleep
duration in hornets was found to be influenced by preexposure to horiz
ontal rotation or to hypo- and hypergravity, by volatile fractions of
their own venom and by the size of their habitat (crowding effect).
