Pulse compression through noncollinear sum-frequency generation in beta -ba
rium borate crystals is investigated. With dispersion to all orders taken i
nto account, numerical calculations, carried out in the frequency domain, w
ere performed for input pulse durations ranging from 10 to 50 fs. Fundament
al pulses of a 10-fs duration at 800 nm were compressed down to 2.5 fs whil
e a 2.5-fs second-harmonic signal was generated. (C) 2001 Optical Society o
