In summer 1993, at the Department of Library and Information Studies, Fachh
ochschule Hamburg (University of Applied Sciences), the starting signal was
given for the new - and in the Federal Republic unique - course of study i
n media documentation. 35 students started the four years lasting course, w
hich should train them as information experts for jobs in media-oriented in
stitutions. The field of action for those Hamburg information professionals
was not limited to the documentation units at the large publishing houses
or broadcasting companies-, the newcomers also should be qualified for acti
vities in other, more multimedia-oriented work fields. 1997 the first ten g
raduates finished their studies successfully, by February 2000, another 66
graduated media documentalists followed. When, how and where those pioneers
found a job after their education, clarifies a whereabouts study (with a r
eturn ratio of 82.9 percent), which also provides information about the ave
rage gross income of the graduates, about their evaluations of the educatio
n concept and their statements of opinion about the planned renaming of the
course.
