Immune-mediated problems are a relatively unexplored field in equine dermat
ology. The pathogenesis is often not or only poorly understood, and most of
the knowledge of clinical symptoms and therapy is purely empirical. Furthe
r, different causes can give similar symptoms, and on the other hand, one c
ause may cause a variety of different symptoms. This review describes urtic
aria, erythema multiforme, unilateral papillar dermatosis, atopy, contact h
ypersensitivity, food allergy, drug allergy, culicoides hypersensitivity, n
odular necrobiosis, pemphigus, vasculitis, equine exfoliative eosinophilic
dermatitis and sarcoidosis.
