The effectiveness of highly charged ion production and X-ray bremsstrahlung
in an electron-cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source is determined by the e
nergy distribution function of electrons in the source plasma. Three compon
ents of electrons are introduced to describe the electron energy distributi
on in ECR plasma. The new model and equations were used in a new version of
computer codes for numerical simulation of highly charged ion production a
nd bremsstrahlung emission in the afterglow mode of ECR source operation. T
he multicomponent consideration of electrons Mi the ECR plasma is applied t
o explain physically and to simulate numerically the effect of long bremsst
rahlung (100-300 ms) in the afterglow regime that was discovered recently i
n the ECR source at RIKEN.
