Three new strontium beta -diketonate complexes have been synthesised and st
ructurally characterised. The reaction between strontium metal and 2,2,6,6-
tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (tmhdH) in isopropanol ((PrOH)-Pr-i) solvent y
ields the adduct [Sr(tmhd)(2)((PrOH)-Pr-i)(4)] (1). The reaction between I
and N,N-dimethylaminoethanol (dmaeH) results in the displacement of (PrOH)-
Pr-i ligands to give [Sr-2(tmhd)(4)(dmaeH)(2)(mu (2)-dmaeH)(2)] (2). The un
adducted complex [Sr-4(tmod)(8)] (3), (tmod = 2,2,7-trimethyloctane-3,5-dio
nate) has also been synthesised from the reaction between Sr metal and tmod
H in (PrOH)-Pr-i solvent. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that 1 is
mononuclear, containing an eight-coordinate Sr atom with bidentate/chelatin
g tmhd groups and four adducting (PrOH)-Pr-i molecules in the trans configu
ration. Complex 2 comprises two [Sr(tmhd)(2)(dmaeH)(2)] units, linked by br
idging dmaeH ligands to form a binuclear complex with two eight-coordinate
Sr atoms. Complex 3 is tetranuclear and contains two six-coordinate, and tw
o eight-coordinate Sr atoms, with the tmod ligands displaying three differe
nt modes of coordination. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserve
